The 2019 Ofen - a Blaufrankisch With Attitude

Updated: 3 days ago

The 2019 Ofen Blaufränkisch by Franz Weninger is a rare and exciting natural wine hailing from the Burgenland region of Austria. The Blaufränkisch grapes in this bottle are grown on a south-facing vineyard that sits among centuries-old mulberry trees, and at an altitude of 340 meters (1,115 feet). And there is no doubt that these conditions contribute to Ofen's distinct character.

About Weninger Winery and Franz Weninger

Weninger is a pioneering winery in the Burgenland region of Austria. It is known for its commitment to biodynamic viticulture and natural winemaking practices, all at the behest of its leaders, Franz and Eva Weninger.

Franz Weninger is probably one of the most "natural" and sustainable wine producers in Austria, which makes sense, as he has been working biodynamically since 2006.

The Weninger estate focuses on producing wines that express their terroir with minimal intervention to create pure, vibrant, and authentic wines. Their vineyards include old vines and diverse sites (in Austria and Hungary), including the prized Ofen vineyard, where the Blaufränkisch grapes for the Ofen wine are grown at a high altitude.

About The 2019 Ofen

Ofen 2019 offers a complex aromatic profile that is both fruity and floral, with spicy, earthy, and mineral undertones. On the nose, aromas of red and dark berries, along with hints of tobacco, pepper, and subtle floral notes that add depth. The palate is juicy and lively, boasting a very fresh and animating character with vibrant acidity, red cherry, black currant, and a pronounced structure of spicy tannins. The 2019 Ofen has a structure that makes it fit for a versatile list of foods - and that's a bonus!

The 2019 Ofen Blaufränkisch from Franz Weninger is an exceptional example of Austrian natural wine, expressing the zingy and mineral-driven personality of Blaufränkisch with a unique natural wine edge.

This was a great sipper, and even better with food!
