What Is a Clone in Wine?

You will see it on a technical sheet or hear it from a winemaker at a tasting, "This block is planted to Dijon clone 115", or "That one is old Pommard clone material". It sounds like inside baseball, but clones actually explain a lot about why two bottles of the same grape variety can taste noticeably different, even when they come from similar climates and get made the same way.

So What Actually Is a Clone?

A clone is not a different grape variety, and it is not a crossbreed either. It is the same variety, propagated over and over from cuttings rather than from seed, that has picked up small genetic mutations along the way. Grapevines are typically reproduced by taking a cutting from an existing vine and rooting it, rather than growing a new one from a seed.


Over decades or centuries of that process, tiny natural mutations creep in. Growers noticed some of those mutant vines produced smaller berries, or ripened earlier, or threw looser clusters that resisted rot better, and they started propagating those specific vines on purpose. Each one of those distinct genetic lines is a clone, and most major grape varieties have dozens of them in circulation.


This matters in the glass because different clones of the same grape can produce noticeably different wines. Some clones give smaller berries with a higher skin to juice ratio, which usually means more colour, tannin, and concentration. Others are prized for aromatics, or for ripening reliably in a marginal climate, or simply for higher yields. A vineyard manager and winemaker choosing which clones to plant is making a real stylistic decision, the same way they would choose a fermentation vessel or an oak regime.

Pinot Noir Is The Grape With the Most Clones

Pinot Noir mutates more readily than almost any other variety, which is part of why it is such a notoriously fussy grape to grow, and also why clone conversations come up constantly around it. The Dijon clones, developed and numbered by a research institute in Burgundy, are some of the most widely planted in the world. Clone 115 is known for structure and colour, clone 667 leans into dark fruit and softer tannin, and clone 777 tends to bring more spice and firmer tannin to the blend. Most serious Pinot Noir producers, from Burgundy to Oregon to here in Niagara, plant a mix of several Dijon clones in the same block specifically to build complexity, rather than relying on just one.


Older heritage clones still matter too. The Pommard clone, named for the Burgundy village, gives deeper colour and a more robust, structured style, while the Swan clone, brought to California decades ago, is prized for its perfume and delicacy despite being a notoriously low yielding, difficult vine to farm.


Chardonnay

In California, the Old Wente clone, brought over from Burgundy in the early 1900s, is behind a huge share of the state's Chardonnay and tends to give generous, tropical fruited wines. The Dijon clones, especially 95 and 96, show up frequently too, generally producing smaller yields with more concentrated citrus and mineral character, closer in style to Burgundy itself. In Burgundy, a mutation known as Musqué, most famous in Chardonnay Musqué, produces an unusually perfumed, almost floral version of the grape that stands out from standard plantings.


Cabernet Sauvignon

Clone 337, developed in France, is one of the most widely planted Cabernet clones in Napa Valley, valued for small berries, concentration, and dark fruit. Clone 4, an older heritage selection, tends to give a slightly more herbal, structured style that some producers prefer for blending. Because Cabernet Sauvignon is so often blended anyway, clonal choice tends to be one more tool winemakers reach for when building a final wine, layering clones the way they might layer barrels.


Sauvignon Blanc

Clone 1, sometimes called the Loire clone, is the standard workhorse behind most classically styled, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc, including a lot of what comes out of Marlborough. The Musqué clone, a naturally mutated selection, produces a rounder, more tropical and floral wine with noticeably less of the grassy, green character the variety is known for. A producer chasing a punchy, zesty style is almost certainly leaning on clone 1, while a softer, more fruit driven bottle likely has some Musqué in the mix.


Can You Find The Clone on a Wine Label?

Rarely. Clone information almost never appears on a wine label itself, since most jurisdictions don't require it, and most casual drinkers have never asked. You will find it far more often on a winery's technical sheet or website, or straight from the mouth of whoever poured your glass at a tasting room. It is the kind of detail that will not change whether you enjoy a wine, but it is a genuinely satisfying piece of the puzzle once you know to look for it, and it explains a lot about why the same grape can taste so different from one producer to the next.
