LCBO Find: HER Shiraz 2020

Updated: Dec 5, 2022

It's rare to get South African wines made by black vintners in Canada for several reasons. One is that these local producers don't yet have a household name with Canadian sommeliers and restaurants. The other contributing reason is that black people represent only 1% of the wine trade in South Africa; this is in a country where 81% of the population is black. So, being given the chance to taste a wine from the HER Wine Collection, a brand run by a group of black women in the Western Cape, I knew I had to make it our most recent LCBO find!

About Her Wine Collection

The HER Wine Collection was born when a group of

HER Wine Collection

black women, all working in the Cape wine industry, realised they could combine their skill sets to create a unique brand. A brand where wine growing, making, marketing, and distribution would be done by them.

The team at HER Wine are all highly skilled black women with extensive experience working in the industry in their regarded disciplines. Each of the core team members has stories of triumph that inspire.

In the words of HER Wine brand "HER wines are made for people who, like us, are filled with optimism and are determinedly chasing their dreams".

Such an incredible story. I encourage you to read the core teams individual bio's here.

About HER Shiraz

Grapes for this wine were sourced from both young and old vines and aged partially in Hungarian oak, and I surmise a factor in this wines effortless tannic feel.

On the nose, red and black berries, dark chocolate, and dried herbs are noticed. On the palate, vibrant black fruit, fig, tobacco, cocoa, prune, and burnt sugar, amongst a moderately long finish, makes this wine an incredible sipper.

The HER Shiraz can be found at the LCBO for only $14.95.

You should grab a bottle and raise a glass to South African females making their mark in wine!
