Today's wine find takes us to Chile, with a focus on the Errázuriz Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2022.
Pinot Noir is one of those grapes that usually demands a dramatic backdrop: fog, wind, ocean, mountain, or all of the above. Aconcagua Costa, the coastal face of Chile’s Aconcagua Valley, gives it exactly that. This Pinot Noir from Errázuriz’s “Specialties” range leans into place first and grape second, which is exactly why it’s worth talking about.

About Errázuriz Winery
Errázuriz is one of those cornerstone Chilean producers that went from “big traditional name” to “quiet terroir hunter” over the last few decades. Their Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir sits in a line they literally describe as an exploration of Aconcagua for the best and purest expression of each variety, aiming to capture a clear sense of origin rather than just a generic Chilean profile.
What’s interesting here is the framing of the range itself. The “Specialties” wines are positioned as site-driven, not just premium for the sake of it, and they tie each label to two major geographic landmarks: Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the western hemisphere, and the icy Pacific Ocean, which has some of the coldest waters in the world. That’s a pretty bold way of saying, “We’re using extremes to sculpt flavour.”
This Pinot Noir is also clearly meant to show how far Chile has come stylistically. Where older Chilean reds were often about ripeness and power, this sits in a lineup that highlights altitude, coastal influence, and precision instead. Errázuriz is basically saying, “We can play in the cool-climate sandbox too, and we’re going to use our geography to prove it.”
The Region: Aconcagua Costa And Cool-Climate Chile
The denomination of origin for this wine is Aconcagua Valley, but the “Costa” piece is key. Errázuriz sources this Pinot from Aconcagua Costa, a sector just 12 km from the Pacific Ocean, which is critical for making cool-climate grapes like Pinot feel at home in Chile. The cold Humboldt Current (Peru Current) running along Chile’s coastline keeps those ocean waters frigid, and that chill moves inland as fogs, winds, and lower daytime highs.
Pinot Noir doesn’t want endless sunshine and heat; it wants enough warmth to ripen, but not so much that it loses acidity and delicacy. Aconcagua Costa delivers that balance through three main levers: proximity to the ocean, strong diurnal shifts, and hillside exposures that let grapes ripen slowly rather than all at once. Being this close to one of the coldest oceanic influences on the planet means grapes can hang longer on the vine, building flavour and complexity while still keeping freshness.
About Errázuriz Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2022
Let's dig into the wine in my glass!

The Errázuriz Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2022 is a deep ruby, bordering on purple on sight. On the nose, darker fruit is noted, such as black plum, and blackcurrant. On the palate, I am reminded why I love cool climate reds from coastal Chile. The fruit produces crunchy red berries (cherry and raspberry) amongst the remaining black, with green herbaceousness that I often get from Chilean wines. The acidity is high, and the tannins are moderate, and while the ABV is 14%, the wine is so balanced that it is not notable in the mouth. The wine comes with a moderately long finish that includes caraway seed among the fruit. The Errázuriz Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2022 is a fantastic showing of what coastal Chile has to offer!
So, where does the 2022 Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir land in the bigger Pinot world? It’s a New World wine, yes, but one that’s clearly built around place: a coastal Chilean site only 12 km off the Pacific, in a valley defined by the push–pull of a towering Andean peak and an icy ocean. It’s part of a series specifically designed to show off that sense of origin, which makes it a great bottle to reach for at the LCBO.
The Errázuriz Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2022 can be found at the LCBO Vintages for $23.95.
