It's been some time since we've enjoyed all that Spain has to offer by way of wine on this blog, so I am thrilled to say that today's LCBO find comes from a cooperative in Rueda, Spain.
Today's wine find is the Cuatro Rayas Tempranillo 2021, a near full-bodied and juicy wine that does well on its own or with food.
About Cuatro Rayas
Bodega Cuatro Rayas has a long history and unique characteristics that set it apart in the Rueda D.O. in Spain. It was established in 1935 during a tumultuous period marked by the Spanish Civil War and was formed as a cooperative of local winegrowing families. This cooperative model was aimed at providing stability and support to its members amidst political and economic uncertainty.
Over the decades, Cuatro Rayas has evolved into one of the leading producers in Reuda, managing approximately 2,400 hectares of vineyards owned by around 300 members. The winery is known for its commitment to quality and community, contributing significantly to the local economy.
About Cuatro Rayas Tempranillo 2021
The Cuatro Rayas Tempranillo 2021 offers a distinctive flavour and aromatic profile. On the nose, the aromas are intense with ripe berries, which are characteristic of Tempranillo. This includes notes of blackberries, cherries, and plums.
On the palate, you are greeted by a smooth mouthfeel. The balance between alcohol and acidity is well-executed, resulting in a wine that is round with a long finish. You'll note flavours of cherry, plum, dried fig, and earthy undertones that consist of leather, and tobacco.
While the Cuatro Rayas cooperative primarily operates out of Rueda, this Tempranillo was made in the neighbouring region of Ribera del Duero, where they've now expanded their winemaking operations.
The Cuatro Rayas Tempranillo 2021 can be found at the LCBO vintages for $17.95.
