Gruner Veltliner is one of my go to wines. Want something fun and white? You need a Grüner for that. Looking for a white with depth on the palate? You need a Grüner for that. Looking for a white that will be a crowd pleasure at lunch? You need a Grüner for that too! So imagine my excitement when I saw the Urbanihof 4U 2024 Grüner Veltliner featured on the shelf. I knew it had to be a part of the wine find series and the accompanying "What I am Drinking This Week" video series on YouTube. Nonetheless, let's get into this little beauty of a Grüner.

About Urbanihof

If you trek over to Wagram, Lower Austria, you'll get to the Urbanihof properties. Here you'll find their 24.5 hectares of vineyards, planted primarily with Grüner Veltliner, which makes up 40% of the estate, alongside Riesling, Roter Veltliner, and a range of other white and red varieties.

Since 2016, the winery has been certified organic, having steadily eliminated pesticides and herbicides in favour of compost, herbs, and natural farming methods. This includes actively promoting beneficial insects, green manuring, and leaving the soil undisturbed mechanically from October through May to encourage healthy humus formation. Urbanihof is also a founding member of the Wagramer Selektion, an association of the region's most dedicated winegrowers.

Urbanihof is a story of extraordinary continuity as a family farm and winery that has been in the Paschinger family since 1598. Today, it is run by the 11th generation, Franz and Sonja Paschinger, with the 12th generation already coming up behind them.

About the Urbanihof 4U 2024 Grüner Veltliner

Buckle up, people, because you are in for a ride on the "drink me - I am approachable" bus.

In the glass, the wine holds a pale golden hue. It is highly aromatic, and you don't need to take your nose anywhere remotely close to the rim to smell it. On the nose, lemon meringue, pear, baked apple pie, and honeysuckle. On the palate, its ever so slight effervescence and nuttiness jump out first, and it is quickly followed by lemon/lime combination, green apple, melon and white pepper.

While still in its youth, the Urbanihof 4U 2024 Grüner Veltliner opens up nicely in your glass. I would clearly drink this now, but could hold it for 3 years max. With only 12% ABV and light in body, this has a place on your patio!

You can find the Urbanihof 4U 2024 Grüner Veltliner at the LCBO for only $21.95
